Meeting Minutes — Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Johns Hopkins University Student Government Association

I. Call to Order 7:39 p.m.

II. Roll Call

?     Excused: Alex Dash. Unexcused: Kevin Barry

 

III. Approval of Minutes

?        Amendment to Stephanie Hsu  giving committee report, as she wasn’t here. Motion to amend by Senator Kirk Sabnani. Seconded by Senator Nick Trenton. Motion to approve by Wyatt Larkin. Seconded by Senator Max Dworin. Minutes approved.

IV. Class Council Election Results — Rohit Dayal

?        Voter turnout stats: 49% turnout for ? 2014, 40% for ? 2013, 37% for ? 2012

V. Executive Officer Reports

a. President — Mark Dirzulaitis

?        Last meeting is today. It’s been a great year. Hope you are all enjoying the Joe’s Squared pizza!

b. Vice President — Elizabeth Duval

?        Mark has been one of the greatest presidents that the SGA has ever had! Applause to Mark!

c. Treasurer — Wyatt Larkin

?        Wrap-up of account balances at end of year. SGA Events as of April 27th, $7939.37. Operations $515.85. Contingency $16,984.69. SAC Operating: $1,412.96 Did not use any this year. SAC Contingency — ended grant process at $8585.09; will roll into budget, which will be done this weekend and into next week. If finance committee would like to come to annual budget meeting, we’d love to have your help. Jason: 112 possible groups that could apply for budgeting, we got 100 groups who applied.

d. Secretary — Diana Baik

?        Perfect Attendance! Congratulations to: Sean Murphy, Benjamin Googe, Moses Song, Nick Trenton, Merrill Anovick, Hyun-Sik Choi, Minerva Kim, and Mark Dirzulaitis!

VI. Committee Reports

a. Academic Affairs

?     Soph. President Alexandra Larsen: Collected 97 reading period violations, some were repeats. Will send a list to deans and SGA.

b. Appointments and Evaluations

?     Senator Mike Wu: Going to make nominations for Ethics Board, CSE, HOP co-chairs, Curriculum Committee, FAS, Springfair in new business.

c. Campus Affairs

?     Senator Stephanie Hsu: There are updates that need to be done for Off Campus Housing Database.

d. Finance

?     Senator Nick Trenton: The voter registration drive went every well. Registered over 350 people. Extended voting to Monday in lieu of Osama Bin Laden incident. Went over amendments for Finance Restructure Bill.

e. Student Involvement

?     Jr. Class President Ardi Mendoza: Nothing new to report. Senator Moses Song: Mini Day of Service — good turnout. Planning on having another one. Registration filled up quickly.

f. Safety and Security

?     Sr. Class President Josh Ayal: Nothing new. Speak to Josh if you want to work on this committee next year. N Charles will be more south, will change how traffic flows around area, impacting safety and security indirectly. Deal primarily with Dean Boswell, multi-person project.

VII. Class Council Reports

a. Senior Class Council

?     Josh: Sr. Class Dinner on Sunday was in a tent on Mason, 600-700 people there, President Daniels was there, free drink tickets, a huge success! Every event we can sell out to Senior Week, we have basically sold out tickets.

?     “Congratulations to the new class councils. You are in for a journey the likes of which you can’t imagine.” Would like to talk to everyone individually. If you haven’t met him yet, introduce yourself to Jason Heiserman.

?     Thank you to this year’s Senior Class Council. If it weren’t for these 6 people and Jason, none of these things would have happened this year. If you will be around from the 18-24, will get insight into how to plan events, need help with Senior Week.

b. Junior Class Council

?     Ardi: Started out giveaway for 201 sunglasses, gave half out at SAS pre-Homecoming Rally. Doing another giveaway, contacted Luke Sand, new Sr. Class President. Hope to give next set of sunglasses out soon. Thanks to everyone in my class. Moses: Mattin Markets is this Thursday at 11 p.m.

 

c. Sophomore Class Council

?     Alexandra: Gave out all our sunglasses in 2 days. People want more, but ordering more next year. Have given out 450 tickets to our midnight breakfast so far. On Monday, May 9th. Thanks to Class Council, had an awesome year. Like to thank Mike Wu, we will miss him.

 

d. Freshman Class Council

?     Fresh. Class President Merrill Anovick: Only class whose sunglasses haven’t arrived yet. Thinking of having picnic early next week. Would like to thank my class council, and other class presidents, especially Josh!

VIII. Advisor Report Jason Heiserman: For new people, I look forward to working closely with you next year. Would like to commend our executive officers this year. This is my 5th year, and you guys have accomplished more than any SGA that I’ve seen here. Baby’s due one month from today!! Whoo!

IX. Group Approvals

?        Mike: The HOP co-chairs Brian and Megan, with advisor Grahe helped decide to select Emily Rosenberg and Jonathan White. Motion from Kirk to approve the co-chairs. Motion seconded by Senator Archie Henry. Co-chairs approved.

?        Curriculum Committee for School of Engineering.  Approving Nick Trenton, Brook Jeang, Christina Jacob, Siren Wei, who are diff majors and years. Motion to approve by Max, seconded by Kirk. Approved

?        Approving groups: Max motions to approve. Seconded by Senator Sean Murphy. Groups approved. Krav Maga and Surageet, not sure of these, but seem good to go. Motion to approve bu Michael. Seconded by Ardi. No opposition, approved.

?        Revoking charters for Chess Club, Foodies, Secular Student Alliance, Young Americans for Liberty. Unresponsive or didn’t follow rules. Motion to deny by Max, seconded by Mimi.

?        Kirk: Ethics Board and CSE. Reviewed apps for 2 hours. Gave 30 candidates a rating from 1-10. Top 12 members to put on Ethics Board, including Mike Wu. Wanted people who’d be able to return as juniors, seniors. Looking for a wide demographic as selections go. Motion to approve members by Max,seconded by Senator Mimi Gu. Approved.

?        CSE needed to fill 2 spots. Got 4 apps. One was from someone in class of 2015. Ended up choosing Khurram Ali and Michael Wu. Motion to approve by Sean. Seconded by Nick. Motion approved.

 

X. Attendance Bill & Amendment

?        Senator Sean Murphy motions to change language from impeachment to removal from SGA on part 13. Seconded by Moses. Amended. Senator Benjamin Googe motions to approve the bill. Seconded by Mike. Bill approved.

XI. Finance Committee Structure Bill & Amendment

?        Nick: We should edit phrasing a little bit. Unclear whether or not treasurer can be on committee. Amend bill: THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the SGA Bylaws, Section I, subsection 1.3 be rephrased as: “The Finance and Appointments and Evaluations committees shall consist of five members, and the Finance Committee shall also include the Treasurer as a non-voting member with all other rights and privileges.” Friendly amendment. Sean motions to approve the amended bill. Seconded by Moses. Table bill for discussion. Adding: rephrasing. Misspelled advice. Will change. Motion to approve by Senator Archie Henry. Seconded by Senator Minerva Kim. No opposition. Approved.

XII. Announcements

?        Note from Senator Kevin Barry: Wanted to convey a message to everyone on SGA. Has met many great people on SGA. Thank everyone for year well done and for help and support.

?        Max: Dump for Dollars is Friday at 3 pm on Freshman Quad. Tickets are $5. Mark won $500 last year! Max is selling tickets.

XIV. Last words — Thanks for a Great Year

?        Mark: Want to put forth a big thank you to EVERYBODY! Smoothest and most productive year we’ve had on SGA. Put on a huge concert, financed a huge concert at beginning of the year: Lupe Fiasco and Wiz Khalifa. Got a 40% increase in the student activities budget.Created Off Campus Housing database that campus affairs and Kirk worked on. Security vans were improved. You all have done tremendous things this year, we accomplished a lot, couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for making this year compfortable.
